Caddigan Kicks Off Campaign
Maureen Caddigan's campaign kickoff remarks
Hello everyone and thank you for coming to my re-election kickoff. It means a lot to me.
Thank you Corey for that wonderful introduction. We continue to have an excellent working relationship and have accomplished a great deal together.
Thank you also Sheriff Hill for your kind words and for being here today. The Sheriff and I have also worked so well together over the years. He is doing a fantastic job for the county.
Thank you both for taking time out of your busy schedules to be with me.
There are several people I want to thank:
- My husband Jim who is my Chief of Stuff
- My assistants Jane and Lynne
- And lastly the Lampros family for opening the restaurant for me today and for their always wonderful food
With that said let me share with you why I am running for a 5th term.
First of all I love my job and I believe I have made a difference over the years. I had a successful 7 years as a school board member, 3 of those as its chairman. All of the schools that served our children at the elementary, middle and high school levels were built on my watch as a school board member. I have always been, and will continue to be, a supporter of education and the teachers who teach our children. During my service as a supervisor 33 schools have been
built throughout the county.
I have 56,000 people in my district. I have 2 towns in the district and have a good working relationship with both mayors, councils and residents.
Our county has grown significantly over the past 10 years to a population of over 412,000 and is the second largest county in the commonwealth.
This year Harbor Station will be a part of our district. It consists of a massive piece of land that I am anxious to see developed into a premier community. The Jack Nicholson golf course is close to re-opening and the John Paul the Great High School would welcome some neighboring activity.
The Potomac River shoreline in our district extends from the Stafford county line northward to Powells Creek thus the reason for the District’s name change. It also presents a marketing tool for development of the peninsula. We need to do more to highlight and market the river and I am very excited about this new venture.
I have had a heavy agenda over the years and there are still certain important projects I want to complete. My promises made to the community over the years have been promises kept.
The widening of Route 1 in Triangle from Joplin Road to Brady’s Hill should be completed next spring. On the easel you can see my plan for Brady’s Hill!
My support for the National Museum of the Marine Corps continues to be unwavering. Funds are now being raised for its further expansion and General Christmas’ plan for a 4/5 star hotel and conference center on the site is now being negotiated. I met this past Thursday with representatives who are marketing the hotel.
I co-chair the BRAC committee with a supervisor from Stafford County and work very closely with both the base commander and General Christmas concerning the additional widening of Route 1 from Joplin Road down to Telegraph Road in Stafford. Some 600 civilians will be arriving on the base this summer and will undoubtedly settle in either Prince William or Stafford and this extra effort hopefully will ease daily commuting for the time being.
A successful bond referendum in 2007 included a park for Fuller Heights Road.
This year’s budget, which we passed in April, allows for the release of the bond’s funds to build the 46 acre facility at a cost of $4.6 million. I am working with little league representatives along with Brenda Gardziel and the executive director of the Park Authority to get this project moving.
The construction of the long awaited regional library will finally be built in Montclair on land proffered for it over 25 years ago. The passage of the budget again allows release of bonds to build it. An architect is being hired and you can see an artistic rendering of it here. It will be a very unique building with the Barnes slave house built into it.
We are looking at 2014 for its completion.
I am also working with a developer who has already filed for the development of an assisted living center on Van Buren Road.
I am in discussions with the owner of the Holiday Inn who has expressed his intention to develop an additional hotel on site with 4,000 square feet of conference space. His application for construction was filed last week.
I have an excellent working relationship with the County School
Board and the Superintendent.
This is my 19th year serving as the County’s liaison with the Quantico Marine Corps Base.
The upgrade of roads in our District, including Spriggs Road, Cardinal Drive, Minnieville Road and Route 1 in Triangle, have all been accomplished by bond referenda during my tenure.
Our police department will be able to hire 17 new police officers. That number went from zero to 17 and I am happy to report that Chairman Stewart and I
successfully presented that proposal to the Board.
I want to personally thank Chairman Stewart for working with me to get these rather large projects moving forward. He has helped me every step of the way.
I have a good working relationship with our board and my efforts could not be realized without their support.
In closing, my priorities continue to be:
- Education
- Public safety
- Transportation
- Economic development
- Keeping taxes low
I have an excellent staff and I am proud of their excellent customer service. Please call us at any time with your comments or concerns.
Again thank you for sharing your day with me!
